Been playing a bit with the available source for the cube and managed to put together my own little demo. It is based almost entirely on the startup code provided by Titanik the pad and reset code by peter and the pong game by desktopman. Well here it is...not as well comented as I like and no tutor to go with it but it will have to do for now.

FIRST DEMO

Peters great site: http://www.console-dev.de/ogc/

One of these days I will have time to organize all this stuff into a proper website.

GC HOMEBREW HAS FINALY BEGUN !!!!!! Go here:

Just in case you find yourself in need of a Broad band adaptor in the next week or two and cant seem to locate one I found a pretty reliable importer that has them for 42$ which is only a 2$ more then they are when you find them here.

I will try to post a bit more info in the comming days and at the very least a review compairing the great new tools found at this site. Thanks goes out to costis and Titanik[CZN] for this new and exciting time.

Okay..I know it has been a while but this scene has been dragging its feet a bit. I am posting to clear a few rumors up, to give a bit of info on the state of affairs and to actually post a bit of news.

First off it has become apparent that the mini-dvd format used by the Gamecube is not readable by the PC nor will it ever be possible to produce a useable image by a PC without a (most likely extensive) hardware mod.

As far as a possible hack using Action Replay there has been no progress and not really any interest as the hack would be tedious at best.

It is apparent that code has been run on the GC by amateur devers but that info is not yet public. There are issues that need to be resolved in the area of legality. There is also some concern as to how easy such a hack will make piracy. The GC has enjoyed an uncharacteristically long run with no apparent piracy and a hack that allows the running of code will most certainly result in ripping the game images.

All that being said lets post a little news. First, someone finally did get around to compiling gcc for GC and have posted it (and even apparently had someone test it). It can be found here:

This link is thanks to Napalms site which is the first to actually post some real info concerning the GC. Everyone else seems a bit gun-shy for some strange reason. Napalms site has actual code snippets (the first public I believe) and some seemingly useful hardware info. I hope this finally sparks some interest in releasing findings so a scene of some sort will finally come about.

There is also a new mailing list I suggest you sign up on. It is brand new as I started it this morning. If there is already a list active somewhere someone please let me know so I can cancel this one and direct others to it. The rules for this list are as follows. No talk of reading the disks on the PC. Also it has been shown that a GC will NOT boot a disk created on a PC so unless you have actually done it YOURSELF we do not want to hear about it. I understand that reversing games is beneficial to deving. I also understand that reading and writing the disks would be nice for deving. Everyone who devs also understands this so lets not talk about it. The only talk of commercial games that will be tolerated are ones such as this: "Zelda cell shading is awesome anybody know how to do it or can point me to a site that will show me how?". These rules are pretty easy to follow I think.

And one more thing of note: There is a forum up on gcdev.com. It is new as well and hopefully will become a center for exchanging ideas.

Lastly you will notice I left news of the PSO hack unspoken....

Come chat on #GCDEV on efnet No rules as of yet but I am sure some will come if the channel is abused.

Need a few news posters also if anyone is interested.

Well it has to start sooner or later. This is what I have so far:

Ways to run the code on the gamecube:

It is the only new console that has yet to be hacked that I have been able to discern. Although I am glad that the software pirates have been out of luck for the gamecube it leaves us amateur devers wanting.

There are a few possibilities in the works that may change that though. It seems that there is a hack in the Phantasy start online game released in Japan that may allow very small amounts of code to be run. This is, as of yet, unconfirmed though. The source is trustworthy but with out a demonstration it is a bit unbelievable.

The new Freeloader disk is finally shipping and that usually opens up holes for devers to pry into. We will have to wait and see how that goes.

And finally there are many rumors that an unmoded gamecube can actually boot from a normal mini-dvd that is burned from a standard drive if the disk is formatted correctly. I find this hard to believe, mainly do to the lack of me knowing how to do it.

We should know in a few weeks if the PSO hack is for real. Even one that allowed us to run a few KB of code would be something for now, so any info would be appreciated. If anyone has the broad band adapter and PSO then a bit of packet sniffing would be much appreciated.

As for compilers a Power PC 750 build of gcc should do the trick. The gamecube proc is very similar although it supports an extended instruction set. If anyone is handy with compiling gcc a windows distro with bintools would be appreciated to get things started. I will try to build it my self in a few days but I never seem to have much luck with it...I hate both linux and makefiles so I have to fight it all the way.

As you can see the state of amateur deving on gamecube is a bit stunted at the moment. The lack of ability to run stuff on hardware is the biggest hindrance. If anyone has any info into hacking the gamecube to run homebrew demos your help would be appreciated.
