The 2005 Christmas Coding Competition was a success.
Our goal was 20 entries and we received 21 but we had
no idea the quality of the entries was going to be so high.
The competition was to have a demo and a game category but
only one demo was submitted.
Great work on all the entries and I wish I only had the
resources to give out more prizes. The left over cash from
the demo prizes will be used to buy the top 5 a compo T-Shirt.
(I will just paypal them the cash and they can order the shirt
or pocket the money...although how they could pass up such a sweat shirt
is beyond me)
Just wanted to say thanks to www.ndshb.com
for unknowingly letting me steal the wonderful screen shots.

Lira: Now that's what I like to call, an entry!
Looks like a commercial game and i had fun while
playing it! 4 thumbs up!
Dovoto: Knew within moments that it was going to
take the prize. Controls felt fluid and the game
was challenging and entertaining. Polished. Great
job!

Lira: Now that's a fine looking game!
Blast elves while listening to oldies music with a
retro game port!
Dovoto: One could tell a lot went into making this
entry. Great graphics and smooth sound made for a
fun (if soon repetitive) entry. I think had this
entry had a more interesting plot it would have taken
first place.

Lira: I love those kind of games! Nice pixel art
on the upper screen, and chip music!
Dovoto: It may have been cheap a entry (his words
not mine) but it was the one I played the most. My
wife and I spend a good half hour trying to get the
best score (she won). A blatant
rip-off of a pc game but well done and fun. Could
have used some sound effects and a bigger playing field.

Dovoto: Probably the most surprising entry and defiantly
the most innovative use of the stylus. If I had any rhythm
I probably would have marked it even higher.

Lira: Amazing! From the creator of WOTR This
game was so hard to play :D
Dovoto: I made it to level three before the wife
got tired of hearing “DOH!” and I had to move on.
This would have been number one with a little
refinement. This game has such potential and of
all the entries it is the one I want to see updated
most.

Lira: You gotta love pixel art!
Dovoto: Definitely different. Actually my
wife’s favorite (I think mainly because she
doubled my score). I had it in my top 5 list
for its great and unique use of the stylus.

Lira: Reminds me the mini-game in Super
Mario 64DS. I think that more obstacles
should've been added. Gets boring pretty fast.
Dovoto: Hmm..had a hard time with this one.
Lots of trouble seeing the screen and making
the ball move. Might have been better if the
ball was on the top screen.

Lira: Comments Fun adventure game, looks
like a real commercial game and it got me
playing for several hours
Dovoto: Were we playing the same game?? Looked
great but could not find any purpose to the game (ie enimies to shoot with my pretty bow)
and encountered a few glitches with the arrow graphics.

|
| Title | Santa's Bad Luck |
| Rank | Good |
| Author | Jandujar
|
| Prize | Pat on the Back |
|
Lira: Nice intro, Somewhat boring game :(
Dovoto: Loved the cut scene graphics and the sound effects. Definitely could have used a radar or map overlay of some sort. The game would have been improved by adding a time limit and increasing the number of presents and making the level a lot easier to navigate.

Dovoto: Well...it was a breakout clone...not much to add to that.

| Title | Snowball Fight |
| Rank | Good |
| Author | Scarta, aka D.Amar
|
| Prize | Pat on the Back |
|
Lira: Early stages FPS.
Dovoto: Good use of the bottom screen as a map overlay. Using the same textures on the walls and floor made it difficult to keep your bearing. Was fun for a short while but could have used a bit more….something

| Title | Santarush |
| Rank | Good |
| Author | Malcolm Parsons aka Pepsiman |
| Prize | Pat on the Back |
|
Lira: This game could be more fun with random generated levels and some sound effects.
Dovoto: Thought what was going on on the top screen was great but it was impossible to see while tapping the bottom screen. Could have used a few more levels and some sound effects to let me know when I hit or missed.

| Author | laZmike |
| Prize | Pat on the Back |
|
Lira: I love FPSs! So many playing modes, Was easy to play. Anyone passed the score of 5? :D
Dovoto: Loved the target mode although it was a bit hard to use the stylus to aim and pull the trigger at the same time. Had the levels been bigger playing against the computer would have had such potential. As it was I felt a bit cramped in that small square room.

|
| Title | Christmas Rush |
| Rank | Good |
| Author | Tim Liszak |
| Prize | Pat on the Back |
|
Lira:
Dovoto: Could have done with a bit of sound and music and a little more variety in level design but it was initially very fun to play. This was close to making it to my top 5 list.

| Title | Operation Snow |
| Rank | Good |
| Author | FluBBa |
| Prize | Pat on the Back |
|
Lira: Isn’t working on my DS/GBA. I've tried 2 different Flash Carts and emulators
Dovoto: Worked fine for me and the other judges. If ever there was a game that should have been submitted on the DS this was it. It was well done, with cool graphics and decent game play but the 4 direction controls on the GBA made for an overall difficult to control game. Get a DS and port this thing over to the stylus!

| Title | Snow Bash |
| Rank | Good |
| Author | Miguel |
| Prize | Pat on the Back |
|
Lira: Reminds me one of SuperMario 64 DS's minigames - yay!
Dovoto: For some reason this would not load for me the first couple of times I tried it. Once I got it going though I was greeted with spectacular graphics (arguably the best of any entry) and some interesting gameplay ideas. Could have used some sound and the snow ball was a bit hard to control. Intuitively I expected the snow ball to leave my hand at the angle I threw it and without sound it was hard to tell when I hit rodent. Very nice though.

| Title | Santa's Sweatshop |
| Rank | Good |
| Author | Sumiguchi |
| Prize | Pat on the Back |
|
Dovoto: A lot of interesting game play ideas were presented in this compo. This was definitely one of them. It was fun to play (if a tad bit easy) and well suited to the platform. If I had prizes for top 10 this one would have comfortably walked away with one. Love the art!!

And a few failed to strike a cord with any of the judges but were not bad |

| Title | Crazy Christmas |
| Rank | Not Bad |
| Author | Benny Rebirth |
| Prize | Better Luck Next Time |
|
Dovoto: I am not sure what it was that was off about this game…the graphics were great, and the game play had such potential but it was very difficult (almost painful for any length of time) to control. I think had we had an unlimited supply of always firing snowballs and could control entirely with the stylus this game would have been much more fun. Hope to see an update.

| Title | Wintercube |
| Rank | Not Bad |
| Author | Scarta (aka D.Amar)
|
| Prize | Better Luck Next Time |
|
Lira: Rubik Cube for the DS. Nice - but the control type is hard to get used to.
Dovoto: I felt this demo probably stretched the Christmas theme the most. A very interesting concept though. I think had the controls been refined and the cube rotations animated it would have made for a much more interesting (if rather non wintery) game.

| Title | TXT |
| Rank | Not Bad |
| Author | David Monkeyboy Gilbert |
| Prize | Better Luck Next Time |
|
Lira: How do you write with this thing?
Dovoto: Never did get it to work on hardware. Played it a bit on the emulator but typing text using 2 buttons and a D-Pad was just not in me. This is another example of a game that would have done much better on the DS using a stylus keyboard for input. I wish I had the patience to explore what was likely an impressive textual adventure.

Dovoto: Not much to say about this one. Interesting idea but was much too easy and much too limited.
